The capital of Sergipe, Brazil’s smallest state (in terms of area), Aracaju’s name is of Indian origin – “ara” which means macaw, and “caju” which means cashew, a fruit that is native in the country. The city’s abundance of macaws and cashew trees before was the reason why it was given its name.
Why you should go there?
Aracaju’s seaside boasts of beautiful beaches which include Robalo and Santa Luzia’s Atalaia Nova. Its number of museums, oceanarium, and sailings add up to its many features as well.
Like other cities in Brazil, Aracaju is also known for its lively and colorful feasts. One of them is Forro Caju. A popular event in the city, the feast attracts thousands of tourists throughout the nation – and even in the whole world – because of its different dance exhibitions and other entertainment activities.
If you want something more interesting, the Tamar Project, which is in proximity to the city, will give you a view of a wide range of sea turtles being preserved.
What to look forward to?
Aracaju has a colonial layout which offers you refined architecture like that of the Metropolitan Cathedral that took 13 years of completion. The São Salvador Church is also among these interesting structures. Of the same age as the city, the church is the first in Aracaju.
Another interesting spot to look forward to in the city is the Bridge of the Emperor. Built over the Sergipe River, the bridge was dedicated to Emperor Pedro II who paid a visit to the city in 1860. Although the bridge leads to nowhere, it has since then been used as a viewpoint.
What not to miss?
Being a Brazilian city, the beaches of Aracaju are something that you should not miss when in the city.
