The area code for the city is 71. When making a call to the city from outside Brazil, do not forget to dial the country code first, which is 55, then the area code and the number you are calling.

 

Business hours in Salvador start from 9am up to 6pm, from Mondays through Saturdays. Most business establishments are closed on Sundays although those located in Pelourinho are open during these days until the afternoon. Shopping malls in the city are open for business every day, from 10am to 8pm. Banks cater to its customers on weekdays from 9am until 3pm. However, if you wish to exchange your money, you might want to know banks in Salvador only cater to this need from 11am up to 2pm.

 

For emergencies, the numbers to remember are 190 for police assistance, and 193 for ambulance and fire assistance.

Visa Renewal

 

For those who wish to extend their stay in the city, visa renewal can be transacted at the Policia Federal at Av. Oscar Pontes 339. A fee of R$69 (or about US$35) is required. You will also have to show your return ticket and a proof of sufficient funds for the remainder of your stay to get extended.

 

Safety

 

Because most sightseeing areas in Salvador are heavily policed, it is actually okay to assume that the city is relatively safe. Still, it does pay to follow some precautions – just in case. For one, avoid carrying valuables or wearing flashy jewelry. Displaying of expensive possessions, such as cameras and cellphones should be avoided as well.

 

At night, try not to explore the city alone, but if you really have no choice, at least stick to well-lighted streets, particularly those with surveillance and with more foot traffic.
