Brasilia is home to several big companies and institutions being the capital of Brazil. As tourists, knowing what these institutions are and what services they provide would be a big help in getting to know the city as well as an aide to make your visit more convenient.

Brazilian Central Bank

Known as Banco Central do Brasil in Portuguese, the Brazilian Central Bank is Brazil’s governing body in economics and finance. As such, it is also the country’s highest monetary authority. The National Treasury, the Bank of Brasil (BB), and the Bureau of Currency and Credit (SUMOC) are the three institutions who established it. The bank is connected to the country’s Ministry of Finance.

Brasil Telecom

A telecommunications company, Brasil Telecom is among the country’s largest companies. It is one of the communication companies that were born from the dissolution of Telebrás. Used to provide services to Brazil’s southern and central parts: Rondônia, Acre, Tocantins, Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná, and the Distrito Federal, the company was used to be known as Tele Centro Sul. Most tourists who want to get a telephone line turn to the company.

Itaipu

With the Itaipu Dam that’s a hydroelectric dam separating Paraguay and Brazil, Itaipu is one of the country’s most important and largest companies as it provides the country with electricity. Based in Brasilia, getting electricity in the city will not be a hard thing to do.

Brazilian Post and Telegraph Corporation; ECT

Sending mail or a package? The Brazilian Post and Telegraph Corporation or the Empresa Brasileira de Correios e Telégrafos will have it all done for you. Also called Correios, the company that’s also state-owned takes charge of the country’s postal service. It also provides a platform for online shopping, banking, forwarding that reaches to over 200 countries throughout the world. The Ministry of Communications operates the company.

RedeTV!

Also known as TV Ômega Ltda, RedeTV! is a TV network of the country, with Amilcare Dallevo and Marcelo Carvalho as its owner. Of the five major TV networks in Brazil, the network is the newest.

Politec

Employing more than 6,000 people, Politec is a provider of IT outsourcing service. In 2006, it was ranked number 2 in BusinessWeek Magazine’s Gartner’s “Top 15 Emerging Outsourcing Players” and was among the “World’s Top 10 Best Performing IT Services Providers” of the Global Services GS100 List in 2007.
