More than being the capital city of Paraná, Curitiba is also home to two traditional football clubs in Brazil: the Clube Atlético Paranaense and the Coritiba Foot Ball Club. The two teams have rivaled each other and create a frenzy in the city every match they have at the Atleiba.

Clube Atlético Paranaense

Established on the 26th of March in 1924, the football team was the result of two of Curitiba’s traditional football team’s merge, the Internacional-PR, and América-PR. Among the national competitions, the club has competed in and won are the Brazilian League and Campeonato Brasileiro Série B where it won first in 2001 and 1995, respectively and the Campeonato Paranaense where it bagged 22 championships.

The Estádio Joaquim Américo is the team’s home stadium. Traditionally called as Arena da Baixada, the stadium has 25,272 seating capacity.

Coritiba Foot Ball Club

Simply known as the Coritiba, the football team, which is also the Paranaense’s archrival, is Paraná’s oldest team as far as football is a concern. Its first match was played in the city of Ponta Grossa on the 23rd of October 1909. Since then, there was no stopping the team from playing the sport.

Its achievements include championships at Campeonato Brasileiro Série A (1985), Campeonato Brasileiro Série B (2007), and the Campeonato Paranaense where it had a total of 33 wins.

The home stadium of the team is the Estádio Major Antônio Couto Pereira, commonly known as the Couto Pereira.
